One of the burning issues in today's Christianity is how to treat and interact with gays. It's an issue that has opened up Christianity to a lot of criticism for a view that many view unfair or judgemental, especially in the last couple of decades as gays have become more a part of society. Honestly, I believe that many in the Church are at a loss with how to teach about Christianity. The age of today, especially here in America, is possibly the most sinful and permissive that the world has seen. Promiscuity is flaunted and allowed over a larger area than ever before. It bombards us in the media and voices itself in sexual slurs ("that's what she said!") at school. Our society has taught us, as young Christians, that homosexuality is acceptable and even natural, and that it should be accepted as part of American society. This is one reason that Christianity has taken hits on it. However, one cannot be a Christian and endorse homosexuality, any more than one can be a Christian and endorse murder, rape or stealing. All of these things, including homosexuality, are expressly declared sins by the Bible. It is unacceptable to follow the brainwashing of society over the word of God.
A question that I am faced with most often is, why is being gay bad? People can't help the way that they are - they're born like that. Isn't it wrong to "persecute" (lol) people for something they naturally are?
First of all, I personally do not believe that. No baby is born homosexual. Often, when boys and girls approach puberty and are still at a slight loss as to what is going on with their bodies, experimentation occurs and young people can be easily decieved into thinking that homosexuality is natural. If one is kept out of the contact of the other sex or is merely a late developer sexually, that can also lead to experimentation. Several clinical studies have shown that there is an increased chance of being homosexual if one has a nonexistent or distant father-son or mother-daughter relationship, which can lead to craving of a member of the same sex. Not only is there absolutely no scripture saying that a person could possibly be created homosexual, but the idea is scientifically unverifiable and the concept is slowly fading away. If homosexuality was genetic, it would be almost impossible to change.
But for the sake of argument, let's pretend that somehow people can be born homosexual. Well, all people are born sinful. Everyone struggles most with different sins - for many, it is being too judegemental. Some are envious. Others lie or steal. Being born with the tendency to be that way is not an excuse for any sin. Let's imagine someone who was born with a special enzyme, which is inherited genetically. It's called monoamine oxidase-A, also known as the "warrior gene". This particular enzyme often reduces the person's ability to feel remorse or merciful, and sometimes results in an increased level of violence. Let's say that, because of this gene, which renders the carrier much more violent, the "warrior" kills a person without remorse. Is this action wrong? After all, they were "born that way".
But, many would argue that homosexuality can't be compared to my example because it's "not hurting anyone". As I have stated before in this blog, God always has a plan. To be honest, he knows what's best for the human race far better than the human race does. He doesn't make rules for the fun of it. In the Bible, God specifically forbids foods such as pork or shellfish to the Jews. Turns out, at that time, the methods of cooking and preparing those foods were less than adequate and often resulted in food poisoning. God forbids certain molds to remain in the house - the same molds that we now know to be pretty harmful to human beings. In Romans 19:4-6 Jesus says "Haven't you read that at the beginning the Creator made them male and female, and said 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'?" In this case, it's not that hard to see consequences that have already taken hold. Although AIDS was not caused by homosexuality, "gay sex" is commonly agreed to be the factor that has most advanced its spread. Now there's something that I wish we had avoided. When people say that sexual immorality is permissible as long as "no one gets hurt", they are tricking themselves. Sin hurts people in the long run, and often in the short run as well.
God created Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, male and female. He meant for them to have sex together and it was holy. The idea of homosexuality is an unnatural perversion upon something that God created for us. It's an idea that came not from the Lord, but from the sins of man. Before the homosexual can turn from this perverted lifestyle, he must recognize that it is wickedness and plea to the Lord for assistance in freeing himself. Leviticus 20:13 says ""If a man also lies with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them".
So where does this leave us, as Christians in an atmosphere of homosexual acceptance? First and foremost, remember that homosexuals are objects of God's love just as everyone else. Although they are sinners, we are ALL sinners. Romans 5:8 says ""But God commendeth His love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us". Hate the sin but not the sinner, and pray that they realize the truth. The homosexual has to realize that what they are doing is not natural, it is wrong. Only then can they move forward under the instruction of the Gospel.
1 Corinthians 6:9-11 : "Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be decieved: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God".

Bradley, shaving is a sin, do you do it?
But seriously, define natural. Does natural mean "occuring in nature"? Because wikipedia has a pretty long list of the exact thing happening in nature.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexual_behavior_in_animals
Out of curiosity, what's your god's plan in Japan? Haiti? What's the plan in allowing millions of people to get and die from cancer?
If only your interpretation is correct, how many True Christians are there? Is Westboro correct in saying that homosexuals are the cause of gun shootings and earthquakes?
Not having scripture about something doesn't make it false. The Bible was written by a bunch of prehistoric old men with superstitions and tiny worldviews. The Bible doesn't say anything about gravity, evolution, or the Internet either. Do they exist?
And of course, are Adam and Eve on the fossil record? Were they created 4.55 billion years ago, and the other Neanderthals/hominids didn't show up for billions of years later? There isn't any evidence for light coming before the sun, as the Bible claims.
The Bible has so many moral flaws that it's absolutely necessary to "interpret" (read: ignore) parts that a person doesn't agree with. Which leads people to project their own morals onto their view of their personal deity.

Alright let's go.
ReplyDeleteI think that my blog post may be summed up in two statements. 1) that being homosexual is a sin. and 2) It is impossible to be a practicing Christian and to not believe homosexuality is a sin. The Bible is very clear and very specific and to believe otherwise is picking and choosing what you believe out of the Bible.
To others, a few things. 1. I do not hate gays and have never hated gays. I believe stealing is a sin but I do not hate people who steal. 2. Tim, to be honest, most of your comment had nothing to do with my post and if you had read any of my earlier posts you would find I had already talked about a lot of your questions. 3. This blog is aimed toward a Christian audience and the purpose is not, nor ever has been, to convert people. If you find my religion that objectionable, then I would invite you to perhaps distance yourself from this blog.
I'll get around to specifically addressing your questions when I have more energy.
Bradley, I have to say, I truly and whole-heartedly disagree with everything you have to say on the topic of homosexuality. You are, of course, entitled to your opinions, but I also find offense in saying that I am not a "true Christian" because I don't think that being gay is a sin. I do consider myself to be a Christian and I don't find any sin in being with the person you love. I also think that your sexual orientation isn't something you choose. Even with heterosexual relationships, you don't just wake up one morning and decide "hey, I'm going to like this girl." IT JUST HAPPENS. It's a feeling that builds over time.
ReplyDeleteI also believe that our God is ALL loving and the Divine Creator. The way I see it is that God created every single person in His image- regardless of race, gender, religion and sexual orientation. With the assumption that being homosexual is innate, why would it be a sin? It's not as if God says "Oops! I made that guy gay... I really messed up on that one."
I think that Tim is also right. Everything in the Bible has to be taken with a grain of salt because it was written so long ago. Take, for example, Ephesians 5:22-24. Essentially, it says that women are subordinate to men, and I would hope that you don't still hold that primitive belief.
Anyway, I'm not trying to insult you Bradley, but I AM extremely offended that you would question my "Christian-ness" because I don't share the same beliefs as you.
Question, if a gay person has tried really really hard to change their sexuality and it doesn't work, then what?
ReplyDelete2) Which parts do you pick and choose? Because I certainly HOPE you pick and choose. How do you decide?
ReplyDeletehttp://www.quickmeme.com/Advice-God/
ReplyDeleteYou had made a previous comment on Oliver's blog post that he was acting out of anger because of previous dramas. I can ensure you, Bradley, that I had not hated you previously, just strongly disagreed with your inconsistent views. However, this post has gone past the limits and disgusts me and I hope you know that you have alienated many people. I believe that it is okay for you to express your opinion, think that being gay is not part of your religion, etc but I think you have gone way too far. Comparing being gay to murdering and rape? I have a gay friend and do not appreciate that comparison and I doubt he or she does either. Maybe you should think before you speak. Second of all, being gay is not natural and they are not "born that way?" Wow, your ignorance just amazes me.Having a gay friend, I'm sure he would GLADLY choose to not be gay if he could living in the homophobic world that you promote. If it was that easy Bradley, nobody would be gay. I am not objecting to your beliefs or your faith, I am objecting your ignorance and I actually feel sorry for you.
ReplyDeleteIt may be that you think being gay is a sin, but don't say that people who are gay can't be Christians, by the way you talked about them in this article, really didn't show anyone that you like people that are gay. In fact it made it seem like you greatly dislike people that are gay because they are sinning against the Bible. The Bible says many thing are sins, including things everyone, including you, do everyday, so does that mean it is impossible for you to be a practicing Christian? You can't say in the beginning of your post that sinners can't practice Christianity, then go on to say that we are all sinners... "However, one cannot be a Christian and endorse homosexuality, any more than one can be a Christian and endorse murder, rape or stealing." This post is very offensive bro and I really don't think comparing people who endorse gays to people that endorse rapists and murderers is acceptable. It's like me saying however, one cannot be a Christian and endorse being anrgy, any more than one can be a Christian and endorse murder, rape or stealing. I mean all sins are equally sinful correct?
ReplyDelete"The Bible is very clear and very specific and to believe otherwise is picking and choosing what you believe out of the Bible."
ReplyDeleteAlthough, as you have already admitted, the bible (intentionally not capitalized) was written in a different time, so some things written in it may not actually be true at all. And as for your avoidance of the shaving question, well I guess that's the picking and choosing your beliefs that you talk about.
Hope god (also intentionally not capitalized) gave you a ton of energy to deal with your hypocrisy
In response to Tim...
ReplyDeleteMany of the laws in the Old Testament (such as the shaving thing and shellfish thing) do not have to be followed any more, as stated later in the Bible.
With homosexuality, it's definitely not something easy to change, it feels natural/right, but so does every sin. Sin isn't something that's easy to change. For example, one of the things I personally struggle with is respecting authority figures, specifically my parents. It's the way I've always been and I can't remember a time that I haven't been that way, however that doesn't make it right. I'm trying very hard to change my behavior, but it's taken years so far and I'm nowhere near close. And I'm no different from people struggling with homosexuality. We're all sinners and no one is better than anyone else, God loves everyone regardless of anything.
Moving on, what is God's plan in Haiti? In Japan? What about cancer? I have no idea, but I know he lets these terrible things happen because people choose sin. When Adam and Eve sinned, they brought death, imperfection, sin, and every other bad thing into the world. God could just take away all the bad stuff, but because He loves us, He let's us choose whether or not we want to sin and whether or not to accept Him as our savior and into our lives.
I'm curious what types of moral flaws you see in the Bible.
Is the world really billions of years old even? Carbon dating is accurate to at most 30,000 years, but I've heard many statistics that it is much less than that...
In conclusion, I think the Bible and what I believe to be the truth about God is like a love story. We're not perfect but He loves and accepts everyone no matter what. You can choose to view it negatively and as a judgement, but if you really understand what the Bible says, you'll understand that it's all about God's everlasting and overflowing love for you. :)
I hope this answered some of your questions!
I. just. had. too.
ReplyDeleteBradley, this post bothers the crap out of me. So,
http://haleylarsen.blogspot.com/2011/04/entry-that-everyone-is-writing-about.html
I think enough people have expressed their distaste at your views, so I will not attack that.
ReplyDelete*However*, I still beg you to consider what drives gay people to decide to be gay? Do they actually enjoy being hated by their families, damned by their religions and called sinners by people like you?
If this is truly a choice. I dare you to force yourself to like guys for an entire week. Can you do it? No. You can't. I know you can't.
But oh well. I suppose you see your defiance as your nobility in standing strong to the Word of God while everyone else is "hopelessly" brainwashed around you.
I'll be praying for you ;)
Nice blog Bradley. Due to the fact that all you've been doing is defending our faith against people bashing it, I thought you might need some encouragement. And, for anyone questioning the authenticity of the Bible, I highly suggest the book "Signiture of God" by Grant R. Jeffery. :)
ReplyDeleteStyx.
ReplyDeleteI believe that we can be easily decieved into things that we become ensnared in so easily we believe them with every fiber of our body. It may indeed be true that it is impossible for you to break free on your own. Isn't this all the more reason to seek the help of God in such a hard struggle?
I have nothing against homosexuals, besides believing that they are mistaken. I don't wish anyone any harm or condemnation or anything like that. And I sincerely, sincerely hope that the Lord acccepts homosexuals into Heaven.
I understand that this post wasn't what you wanted to hear. I understand that you have trouble understanding how or why God works this way because I feel the same way very often.
I wish that I could talk to you in person, instead of to an anonymous stranger who could be anywhere. Remember - God loves you.
And, in all seriousness, I will be praying for you, "Goddess of Hate".
"Moving on, what is God's plan in Haiti? In Japan? What about cancer? I have no idea,

How do people manage to rationalize this. The holocaust probably falls under this as well?
for y'all who support you args w/ the bible, y'all should really watch "a bible tells me so" and try to keep an open mind

BDaws I fully Agree with all of your statements and I am proud of you for speaking out and standing strong with your faith.
ReplyDeleteEphesians 5:22-24 says, "For wives this means submit to you husbands as to the Lord. For a husband is the head of the church. He is the Savior of his body, the church. As the church submits to Christ, so you wives should submit to your husbands in everything."
ReplyDeleteHowever, you failed to include verses 25-30, which talk about how husbands should love their wives just as Christ loved the church.
Although it seems sexist, it's really not. In general, men want to feel respected and women want to feel valued and loved. These verses illustrate God's attention to what it seems most members of each gender want.
1 Timothy talks about how women should study quietly and submissively, this seems unjust, but you must also look at the historical context. At the time, women were not even allowed to study, so studying quietly and submissively was an amazing opportunity for them. My take on it is, that people need to be humble and not rub what they have in other people's faces. Just a thought.
Jesus loves everyone :)
Second, I would like to address choice. It is a simple argument to say that people would not choose to be homosexual much as blacks would not chose to be black during the slavery era (slavery is, in fact, endorsed by the Gospel). Therefore, it must be genetics. Yet, I find this argument wanting.
ReplyDelete"Several clinical studies have shown that there is an increased chance of being homosexual if one has a nonexistent or distant father-son or mother-daughter relationship..."
I am a little confused by this statement. Clinical studies test drugs, the efficacy of treatments and such. Furthermore I think the author is trying to say that social science has SHOWN (note shown is not proven) there is a increased probability. This is a simple case of a logical fallacy. Correlation does not mean causation.Just because the above relationship exists does not mean that having a lacking relationship means you will choose homosexuality. NOTE, i don't believe this quote even suggests that homosexuality is a choice, but the author uses it as such, so i thought I'd comment.

"there absolutely no scripture saying that a person could possibly be created homosexual..."
ReplyDeleteHERE is another example of a logically fallacy. This fallacy exists because a lack of recognition of positivism. This essentially states that if you cannot disprove something, you MUST accept that it possible could exist. When applied to this scenario, we cannot prove that a homosexual person cannot be created, for the Scripture never says this. If the Scripture said that God has never and will never create a homosexual, this would be a different story. Yet, this is not the case. Because we cannot disprove that God does not create homosexuals, we MUST accept the possibility that God does create homosexuals. Just because the Scripture doesn't speak on a subject, it doesn't mean that the adverse is true.

"the idea [that someone can be created homosexual] is scientifically unverifiable"
ReplyDeleteTHIS is also false. It runs the assumption that homosexuality is not genetic, therefore proves its own correctness. (What im saying here is that if the author recognized that homosexuality could be genetic, he might also realize that it is scientifically verifiable.) Yet, there exists an analogous situation that is less heated: handedness. Scientists can point to no specific gene that causes someone to be left handed or right handed. They associate three genes with it , but have no direct connections. Handedness, does in fact lie in the field of epigenetics. Researchers assert that early environmental conditions can affect which genes are expressed. In handedness, this assertion is evident: which ever hand you hold closer to your mouth -- depending on which side you lay on in the womb -- affects which hand is dominant. This is a plausible explanation for homosexuality. Just because scientists cannot point to a specific gene and say that that gene causes homosexuality does not mean that it cannot be in ones nature. We cannot decide our handedness, but do left handed people merit any less respect?I think my point is evident.

"God always has a plan. To be honest, he knows what's best for the human race far better than the human race does."
ReplyDeleteGod creates humans
Humans are part of the human race (i know this premise is silly, but it is necessary).
NOW, I am going to run under the assumption that the author is correct in that God does not create homosexuals and that homosexuality is a choice. Deductive reasoning suggests that if God has a plan and it is the best plan for the human race and that humans are members of the human race (obvious, I know), then God has a plan which is the best plan for each individual human. And God creates all people. Some people are homosexuals (by choice, later on in life). Then God must create people with the plan that they will choose to be homosexuals and that is the best plan. But God, apparently, does not create homosexuals. So something of the following must be false: God creates all people, God does not have a plan, God's plan is not the best plan, God does not create homosexuals. Because the last one of these is never directly stated in the Gospel and we want to assume the word of God is true, we must assume that God does create homosexuals.

"If homosexuality was genetic, it would be almost impossible to change."
ReplyDeleteTHIS is just wrong. Quite frankly, it shows an inept understanding of biology and is in no way factual whatsoever. Skin tone is genetic, it is a quantitative trait, meaning it varies along a continuum. If you have eyes, you can see that over spring break people changed the color of their skin. Intelligence level is genetic, but i can get smarter by going to school. Muscle mass, height, weight, predisposition to disease -- all genetic, does that mean we cannot change them? No. It is possible to change. Therefore, the exceptions to the rule (people changing sexual orientation) do not show that it is a choice.

Hello, I don't know you but frankly I don't ever want to know you. I am gay and I have known since grade school. IT IS NOT A CHOICE! Trust me, I KNOW! You do not. All of the people who say, "Oh, well homosexuality is a choice." IT IS NOT! Deciding whether to purchase Nacho Cheese Doritos or Corn chips is a choice. There have been so many times where I want to die because of people like you. And I guess if there is a God and a Heaven I will be going STRAIGHT TO HELL! And that's exactly where I want to be because then I won't be surrounded by people like you. I'm sorry but you're "opinion" is wrong. I mean obviously you can still have your opinion…but it’s wrong. I didn't even think there was anybody my age who still thought that homosexuality was a sin. I could go on and on about how dumb some people are but I’m going to end it with this. I am gay, I am happy being gay, I am a good person, and my hopes for humanity have shrank a little because of you. Bye.
ReplyDeleteanswer to bradley's answer to styx...
ReplyDelete"I believe that we can be easily decieved into things that we become ensnared in so easily we believe them with every fiber of our body" bradley, this probably applies more to you than to whoever your are criticizing.
"I have nothing against homosexuals, besides believing that they are mistaken." Just curious, what makes you right?
"I wish you would talk to me in person"
ReplyDeleteHonestly Bradley, who is going to want to talk to you in person after this? This has probably traumatized the gay community at Wayzata High School more so that they would be MORE terrified to speak with you.
Please read this: http://www.soulforce.org/article/644
ReplyDeleteI find it depressing that you view your fellow humanity as beneath you.
If you don't hate homosexuals, yet you equate them to rapists and murderers, do you therefore not hate murderers and rapists? I don't know about you, but I am inclined to dislike who commit such atrocities. I would just like to ask you if you are friends with rapists or murders.
ReplyDeleteWow, the comments kind of exploded. I'm not trying to bash on your religion or belief so I apologize if it seems like I am.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to try and talk about the Bible here, but I've only read it once, so feel free to correct me. You stated in your first comment that "It is impossible to be a practicing Christian and to not believe homosexuality is a sin. The Bible is very clear and very specific and to believe otherwise is picking and choosing what you believe out of the Bible." So it seems like you believe that the Bible should serve as a definitive moral compass. The main passage which seems to be against sin is in Leviticus 18:22: "Do not have sex with a man as you would with a woman. It is an abomination." I would agree with you that homosexuality's sinfulness is very clearly outlined here.
I would love to hear your opinion then on the passage from another book of the Old Testament which was supposedly written by Moses, Deuteronomy 22:28-29: "If a man happens to meet a virgin woman who is not engaged to be married and he seizes her and rapes her but is caught in the act the rapist must pay the girl's father fifty silver shekels. She must marry the rapist, because he has violated her. And so long as he lives, he may not divorce her."
Do you think that this rule should be followed?
Also I grabbed the full verse about homosexuality, and is as follows:
ReplyDelete"If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them."
If you were to strictly follow the Bible, shouldn't you believe that they should be put to death?
YEAH! lets bash women's rights next! women dont need suffrage! afterall, the bible says they're inferior... and dawson follows whatever the bible says. right dawson?
ReplyDelete"Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner" (1 Peter 3:7)
"I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man." (1 Tim. 2:12-14)
reading the word "gay" hurts my christian eyes far too much.
ReplyDeletego jump into lakes with your iphone batches!
god creates everyone right? and he plans out everyones life completely correct? and he also has the power to do everything and anything?
ReplyDelete(at least this is what I've learned in church since i was 5)
So why would he create a gay person if he thinks being gay is so bad? Why wouldnt he just make them straight? and why would you post something so controversial on facebook? (if you wanted this to be just between you and other christians, dont put it on facebook where everyone of your friends can see it you jackass)
BDAWS! youre the black guy in this video. enjoy
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euXQbZDwV0w
I also take offence to the statement made above about how you cannot be a Christian and still think that homosexuality is ok. I think that you have the right to express your own opinion, but I fell very disrespected by being called un-Christian because of this belief. I respect your believes and you should be respectful of mine.
ReplyDeleteI support everyone having their own opinions but I just want to say a few things too haha
ReplyDelete1- First off, I think it is important to understand the time period when the scriptures were written and that in those times, words meant different things. Anyone who ever took world history should know that way way way back when, the word "homosexuality" refered to a relationship between a grown man and a much younger (usually pre-teen) boy. Now-a-days, this is called pedophelia. So in reality one should interpret this is as God finds pedophelia a sin, and not a loving, healthy relationship between two grown, responsible men or women.
2- Also, the topic of homosexuality is only mentioned 3 times in all 27 books of the new testament. Jesus himself never talked about it once in the bible. So, I wonder why other things only mentioned a few times aren't as practiced by christians as condeming gays. Like, eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10. no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15:19- 24. Exodus 21:7 even sanctions slavery! Those aren't practiced now-a-days because they're unrealistic for today's times. So isn't OKing homosexuality fit better with today's times? Please explain to me how we know and choose what parts of the bible we should apply to our lives currently, and what parts are just not very practical.
3- I dissagree that being gay is a choice. Like someone said before, why would anyone CHOOSE to be beaten by un-accepting parents and piers, mocked with offensive terms like "fag," discriminated against at the places people should feel most comfortable such as the workplace, home and most importantly church, and also CHOOSE to have less marital rights then an average couple, all on a daily basis?
4- I would love to hear responses from anyone, because i'm deeply interested in the topic. Thanks!!
Man, it must really suck when you can't endorse who you are...
ReplyDeleteU do no that being homosexual is the same according to the bible as eating a red lobster so wtf is the big deal I think ur just a homophobicdude who needs to get over the fact that people are who they are. All ur doing is becoming a conforms to the pompous and ignorant ways of religion if u get past the lie that is religion I believe that u can finally except gays for who they are and not as some sort of abomination that the church does
ReplyDeleteGod is a lie religion is a huge load of bs those who believe in religion are dumb give my proof and no the bible doesnt count it could have been written by a crazy person i want solid irresputeable proof o yeah thata right there is none
ReplyDeleteEven if you don't agree with this, please post it on your blog for discussion:
ReplyDeleteWhy is it that in the context of shrimp/pork or even the treatment of women cited above Christians are typically willing to say "times have changed, and the Bible was written in a particular context" but are unwilling to consider that if the Bible was written in a different context, the parts written about homosexuality are also outdated?
Wonderfully put Mya :)
ReplyDeleteGod bless!
i'm actually just very curious. why is being homosexual a sin? what harm does it cause to you as an individual, bradley? what harm does it cause to the society around us? i understand why rape would be considered a sin since some directly involved is getting emotionally and physically hurt. what have heterosexuals done to you?
ReplyDeleteif your answer is "because the bible told me so," i feel very sorry for you and hope you can open your eyes and try to make friends with a gay person. i bet you couldn't.
i'm sorry you're getting attacked for your views but you expected this, don't lie. if you are entitled to YOUR opinions then WE are entitled to ours so i would appreciate it if you didn't act like you're this poor kid that everyone is attacking.
Bradley this post upsets me. No, I'm not homosexual, and I understand this piece was prescribed for a narrow audience but I am surprised at your lack of empathy. This has really changed the way I see you and I cannot disagree more with your opinions because I don't believe you should be judging someone so harshly and so critically for something they cannot control. Not only can they not control it, but why on earth would they choose it? Why would they be "mistaken" for this long? Why would they go on marches, have campaigns, etc. if they could so easily be convinced/cured of their 'mistakeness'?! No. They didn't choose this. What if God chose this for them? I cannot stand how isolating your post would make any homosexual feel. I'm about to apologize for bashing/scrutinizing your post when I'm fully aware that you believe I'm wrong and that this is unnecessary, but I needed to let you know (even though many others apparently already have) that maybe you are the one mistaken.
ReplyDelete"I believe that we can be easily decieved into things that we become ensnared in so easily we believe them with every fiber of our body." - Bradley Dawson
ReplyDeleteHave you thought, Bradley, that maybe things you believe in like, for instance, certain archaic bible verses written by very narrow-minded men, may be a result of being "ensnared" in something you believe with "ever fiber of your body?"
i don't believe that there is much of the bible that holds true, but as many people have expressed here, many parts of the bible are unreliable. My pastor herself told my confirmation class that the story of Adam and Eve isn't true; but merely a representation of the creation of man. You can't take everything you see in a centuries-old book literally.
I know you're more educated than that.
"The idea of homosexuality is an unnatural perversion upon something that God created for us"
ReplyDelete"The homosexual has to realize that what they are doing is not natural, it is wrong"
" Before the homosexual can turn from this perverted lifestyle, he must recognize that it is wickedness and plea to the Lord for assistance in freeing himself."
Even though Bradly doesn't simply state "I hate homosexuality," you can tell he doesn't think too highly of them. If you notice he refers to them as people who are just joining our society who are living in 'perverted ways.'
Don't get me wrong I'm all for first amendment rights and having your opinion, but attempting to apply ancient scriptures to modern-day society in itself is a fallacy.
By the way read this http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/1837840.stm
Its kind of ironic that those who devote themselves to the same scriptures you quote--ended up being the boy-touching homosexual themselves.
bradley, you said in your "denominations" post that there are bible verses that "none of us even understand correctly."
ReplyDeleteso how can you be using them against homosexuals in this post here??
Bradley this is awful... yes you are entitled to your own opinions but you cannot compare homosexuality to rape and murder. Many people do not CHOOSE to be homosexual and they have very difficult times accepting it so flat out saying that they are bad people for it is despicable.
ReplyDeleteif anyones a sinner it is you for posting this. i am appalled.
Amy, I see that no one has answered your question yet about what someone is supposed to do if they have tried everything to avoid being gay or lesbian. The bible says that when this happens we are to "Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord" (Acts 3:19). When there is nothing left to try we are clled to rely on the Lord to work in our lives to free us of our sins. If we give our lives up to Christ 100% then He WILL change us because He loves us and WANTS us to not sin. He wants us to be His pure children. That is why He forgives us of our sins, because He LOVES us. A LOT. If we submit our lives to the Lord and completely rely on Him, we can overcome anything.
ReplyDelete"He replied, 'Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.'" (Matthew 17:20)
Anything can be overcome through faith in the Lord.
I have another question towards no one in particular, but it is just something to chew on.
-If God made homosexuality a sin, and He loves His creation (especially humankind which He made in His own image), then why would God purposely create them with homosexuality? The devil has a tight grip on us through sin.
-While homosexualls did not want the persecution for being gay or lesbian, neither did Christians in America want all of the persecution we get for being Christians, yet we still CHOSE to be Christians. I guess what I'm saying is, is that while I DO NOT HATE HOMOSEXUAL PEOPLE, their sin is their choice (Its not like God wants us to sin) and there will be others out there that do hate on homosexualls. This is because humans are sinful and hate is one of those sins.

The new testament was written two thousand years ago, a time when social behavior was completely different and certain things were and were not acceptable as they are now. And not to mention written by not Jesus himself, but random guys that just knew Jesus. If you can find me one place in the bible where Jesus himself said homosexuality is a sin, then I'll believe you.
ReplyDeletei have a question to put to everybody. Why are gays so bad?? is literally the only reason why you don't respect their choice because a book written by a bunch of old men centuries and centuries ago said that gays are bad?? (they also said women are below men; and said that god also allows slavery, including selling your own daughter as a sex slave (Exodus 21:1-11), child abuse (Judges 11:29-40 and Isaiah 13:16), and bashing babies against rocks (Hosea 13:16 & Psalms 137:9).
ReplyDeleteso, if you can give one legitimate reason why being gay is bad, then i will respect you.
but i don't think you can. and that's what pisses me off; because you are so narrowminded you will believe wholeheartedly such an inconceivable notion.
lololol
ReplyDeleteNo one chooses to make their life harder. If I had the ability to choose to be gay, I would choose to be straight.
ReplyDeleteGod is a lie religion as a whole is bull and props for standing up for ur beliefs but dude really wtf people are who they are let them be that way with out judgements
ReplyDeleteThank you for understanding, Athena. There's too many comments to respond to, and they rack up fast. We're still trying to figure out what to do about them.

ReplyDelete"If you don't hate homosexuals, yet you equate them to rapists and murderers, do you therefore not hate murderers and rapists? I don't know about you, but I am inclined to dislike who commit such atrocities. I would just like to ask you if you are friends with rapists or murders."
God hates the SIN not the person. In God's eyes all sin is equal, which means every single person's sin is equal the that of rape and murder. The bottom line is everyone sins, no one is better than anyone else because all sin separates us from God. The beauty of it is that if we accept Jesus as our savior, we can be forgiven and spend eternity in Heaven with God. :)
Also as humans, it is not our place to judge others.
I have read with great interest this blog post. Why? Because recently I was invited to a marriage of 2 gay women I know. I also know others dealing with these issues in their families and extended families. And, my church is now embroiled in it.
ReplyDeleteLet me be clear. I am a Christian who believes homosexuality is not God's plan. He created men and women anatomically to complement each other and provide a beautiful spiritual experience within marriage. Those who have a Christian marriage where Christ is its head know what I mean and no artificial or deviant relationship can understand such a psychophysical union.
I have homosexual friends. We have long talks where I have learned some had early attraction to the same sex and others were drawn into the lifestyle by people around them. No one has told me they tried to walk away from their attractions at an early age. Most walked toward it. My friends are articulate, professional, intelligent people -- not casual in their relationships. However, I have found a few have become atheists after becoming homosexuals which makes me think they chose "No God, No rules". Or, they have an all loving god who never judges anybody, excuses everything, condones every action! That is so anti-God.
Most of these posts misapply scripture. They quote old testament scriptures given only to the nation of Israel by God for their protection. You don't understand them, either, and sadly show your lack of knowledge. Israel was to be a "light to the nations" by their pure living and love of God. Are you aware that although the Law said that a person who does certain things will be put to death, rarely, if ever, was one put to death. The Law was enough to be a deterrent.
Does God love homosexuals? Yes, He does, just as He loves people who lie, cheat, steal, and do other things more dastardly, but He does not want them to continue in their impure activities. However, before one comes to Christ, he/she will use all kinds of arguments to support their life situations. But, if one comes to the Savior, in full repentance and sorrow, they will then see themselves differently and stand before a Holy God in awe and wonder and seek the purity He requires of them. They will want it and crave it, crying out to Him for His best gifts for them. If one is not seeking purity before God, it seems to be a sure sign they are not seeking God's ultimate best. The sacrifice of the blood of Jesus Christ is trampled underfoot and treated without value.
I keep contact with my friends, but more and more I am beginning to withdraw. Homosexuals cannot reproduce. They must draw people into their spider's nest. And, they do. If they didn't, they would be gone within a generation. Do I believe some have this attraction early on? Yes, I do. Do I think they can break that attraction with Christ's help? Yes, I do. I was born with sinful tendencies and I stopped them when Christ showed me how distasteful they were to Him after I was born of the Spirit. Everyone noticed. I am free. My sin was not homosexuality, but it was just as crippling.
I cannot attend a wedding of same-sex people because when I go to a wedding, I support the couple, hope to see them have a family, grow in Christian love and be a demonstration of Christ and His Church to the world. A homosexual couple can never represent this mystical union.
Christ said to the woman at the well, "Go your way and sin no more." She wanted Him more than her old lifestyle of repeat marriages and immorality. When anyone wants the sacrifice of Christ more than an immoral life, that person will turn away from sin and become an ambassador of righteousness as the Samaritan woman became. Many would rather face Christ, as the rich young ruler did, see His requirements, and sadly walk back into their old life.
Oh, you who want to justify your life will despise me, but just as they despised Christ, know we are praying for you to revolt and free yourself from the enemy's snare. Run!!!!
This is absolutely ridiculous and cruel. I can't believe you would seriously put homosexuality in the same category as murder. It makes me sick, and it reaffirms my belief in the absolute ridiculousness and idiocy of Christianity. Years ago I decided i did not believe in God, and honestly, in the past couple months I have been questioning my non belief. But this just reaffirmed my knowing that God does not exist. Bradly, you disgust me. I am actually shaking right now at my anger at you. I can't believe you have the nerve to write something so incredibly narrow-minded. I just lost all respect I had for you.
ReplyDeleteHeil to the Opium of the masses. Just as addicting and harmful to the human race as any drug out there.
lol ok
ReplyDeleteyou spelled my name wrong :)
Dear Anonymous who spelled Bradley's name wrong:
ReplyDeleteKeep in mind that this blog is intended for people who are already Christians who are looking to explore their faith more and find truth and answers. I just watched a great video that Francis Chan made, and it was saying how God knows so much better than we do. As humans, we have our own morals and beliefs, so often times we say "oh, God shouldn't do this" or "God wouldn't do that." But really, who are we to question the God of the universe in that way? Although we don't know (and will never know until Heaven) why God doesn't want us to be homosexual, it's important as Christians that we realize we cannot put God in a box and say what he should and should not do according to our morals. Also, remember that homosexuality is just another sin. By comparing homosexuals to murderers, Bradley was trying to place emphasis on the fact that it is a sin just like anything else. Homosexuality is equivalent to pride, acting upon our anger and rage, using drugs, judging others. We all struggle with sin, and this blog is not in any way meant to say that homosexuality is worse than the rest of the sin. As Christians, we realize that the homosexuality sin is one that most Christians struggle with at some point during their lives, it's a hard one to deal with in our small finite human minds. We plan on writing other blogs about other sins that people struggle with understanding as well. I would really encourage you not to let this single blog post of a single opinion turn you away from exploring God. Read the Bible, and I think you'll be surprised to find that in the Bible, it shows that God is the most loving being in the entire universe, and everything He says and does is for our benefit and good. Most people don't picture our God this way, and that's just because they base their knowledge of the Bible on what other people say and their opinions about it. Do me a favor and open up your Bible and see what it says for yourself...who knows, maybe you'll even find some stuff you really agree with!
